AvrilSurprise! In an unprecedented move the up-coming One Piece Film Z, which launches in Japanese theaters December 15, will feature Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne!

How did this magical pair come about? Well, according to Shonen Jump issue 47, Lavigne loves One Piece and Eiichiro Oda (the series creator) loves Lavigne’s music. Lavigne and Oda exchanged music and thank you letters and it was settled! Lavigne will be contributing two songs to the movie – “How You Remind Me” (originally by the band Nickelback) and “Bad Reputation” (originally by artist Joan Jett).

“Bad Reputation” is one of Oda’s all-time favorite songs since it matches the One Piece pirate characters’ tireless pursuit of their dreams. Lavigne’s team suggested “How You Remind Me” in addition to that song. While Lavigne has sung “Bad Reputation” before, “How You Remind Me” will be original to One Piece Film Z. In case you are wondering, Lavigne is engaged to Chad Kroeger, the lead singer of Nickelback.

This will be the first time Avril Lavigne’s music will been used in a Japanese movie and the first time that a One Piece movie has used songs from an overseas artist. It is also the first time that a One Piece movie has had two theme songs of its own.

Avril Lavigne is big in North America and we most definitely love her here at Saiyan Island. Let’s hope this brings some extra exposure to the One Piece series and boost it’s popular here in North America!

You can listen to “Bad Reputation” and “How You Remind Me” in the following videos. “How You Remind Me” is sung by Nickelback in the video below, but again, Lavigne will be doing it for One Piece.

One Piece Film Z is the 12th movie in the One Piece series. It will be released in Japanese theaters on December 15, 2012. The movie will be the first to take place in the New World, pitting the Straw Hat Pirates against their strongest enemy yet – a man named Z. Drawings and commentary by Oda-sensei indicate he is a human with cyborg enhancements and unreal power. One Piece Film Z is being marketed as a movie that will “surpass Strong World” and contain a “heroic battle” between Luffy and Z.
