But from what I remember, to complete the process of unlocking his true potential, supreme Kai said that Gohan should just do what he normally does when turning into a super Saiyan. When he did, his hair didn’t turn yellow but powered up more than a super Saiyan and slightly changed his physical appearance.

It’s true that they didn’t mention that Gohan couldn’t go Super Saiyan. But he should have turned when fighting Buu. He was beaten up bad until Goku came to the rescue.

Maybe he just didn’t know how to go SSJ at that time. A couple of years has passed in the movie timeline so he might picked up a trick to do it. Maybe jumping straight to SSJ2 or Supreme Kai might have told him how to properly do it.

After Super Buu absorbs ultimate gohan, he also absorbs the form’s power and skills. For some unknown reason, Gohan looses the ability to use his ultimate form, that is why his power returns to the way it originally was before the kai training. Remember Buu can merge with a kai, taking on it’s form and abilities, even if the kai can be saved, gohan for example, the form and abilities stay with Buu.

Vegeta is more powerful than Goku, but Goku got formal martial arts training while Saiyan martial arts is just like brawling. Its like putting Superman against a clone of himself that knows martial arts, he’ll always look like a crappy fighter in comparison.

In the official Viz English translation of the manga:
Gohan: How do I become this ultimate fighter?
Old Kai: You turn into that super whatever often enough. Fire it up, just like that.
Gohan: Just like turning Super Saiyan…Okay I can do that.
Then he powers up = Ultimate Gohan

“Ultimate” Gohan is all of Gohan’s power, Super Saiyan or otherwise, unlocked into his base from. To me this means he can not transform into a Super Saiyan in the traditional sense. If you look closely you can tell his hair is spikier and his eyes are more stern or angry, like a Super Saiyan but no yellow hair or green eyes. If they find a way to explain it in this movie then ok, but if not it is just as wrong as GT.

After the Elder Kai unlocks Gohan’s potential he no longer can go SSJ(or has a reason to) because of his Mystic form which pretty much made Gohan stronger and allowed him to tap into all of his energy without the use of something like transforming. Go back and watch the episode where Gohan first uses his Mystic form. The Elder Kai tells Gohan to power up like he’s going SSJ but instead of going SSJ he just powered up and his hair stood up like he transformed.

Sameer Khan if you had watched all the OAVs of Dbz, you will remember that Akira Toriyama has the habit to not exactly respect the manga, the chronology or the characters levels of power in his movies.. such as in “the return of cooler” and others… and they still remains fucking good to watch. Nothing is shocking me at this stage and the purple cat seems to be charismatic. Morever he will inevitably be stronger than buu so…. i inevitably like that !!! I’m pretty sure that he is the big boss and the girl we can see in the background isn’t a vilain but just a character such as Tapion, whose story will trigger the fight between Goku and the “egyptian cat”. Sorry if i have made mistakes by writing. I just hope you understood me. I’m not an english speaker, im just a guy who wanted to give his opinion

Louis… my gosh, are most DBZ fans ignorant. The OVAs and films were NOT canon, and Akira Toriyama had very little if ANY involvement in them. Same goes for GT. Toriyama has stated that, through his involvement, this film WILL be canon. But under normal circumstances, only manga material is canon.

Pfff ! it’s not because gohan is unable to go to super saiyen that kai decides to unlock gohan potential… Gohan was still able to do it and by broking the z-sword Elder kai appeared. IT IS CLEARLY STATED IN THE ANIME AND MANGA THAT GOHAN ATTEMPTS TO GO SSJ BUT CANNOT. GO BACK AND READ/WATCH THEM. Since you are too lazy to do it, and since SI does not allow links, here’s the quote:

Kai: “You change into that super thing-a-majigie. Gather your energy like you do that.”

Actually, Gohan can turn into super saiyan. Alex, your quote is exactly true. I’ve read the manga and watched the anime here in the States, and also read/watched them in Japanese. The quote is true, but the implication is that:

Gohan asks Elder Kai how to transform into the unlocked-potential state, and Kai replies by

telling him it is just like transforming into super saiyan, that Gohan has to gather his energy

(qi) just as he would to turn into ssj. So Gohan does, and voila! His power level increases

dramatically and his facial expression changes to a more mature image. Seeing that

Gohan doesn’t change much outside, Goku expresses awe that there’s no ssj-like

transformation yet he’s so powerful. Elder Kai responds by saying ssj transformation (with

all the lighting and hair color change) is just a gimmick compared to this. So I think you

just misunderstood the implications, or maybe the English translations were incorrect.

Elder Kai simply instructed Gohan how this is similar to turning into a ssj, not that he HAS

TO turn into ssj.Additionally, Gohan can turn into ssj in GT, but I can see how some would argue that it’s non-canon being that Toriyama wasn’t too involved. But he was certainly involved for the beginning part of Baby saga, and Gohan does transform into ssj during that saga. Long explanation… Sorry

Doubt it… IF the limited release in Japan does well THEN Funimation might get involved with a wide scale (international) release too. The latter could be in either subbed OR dubbed format anyway LOL!

Regardless, it’ll probably take a few months to a year AFTER that release for it to be available in the states… in DVD, Blue Ray etc. m/

One of the stupidest comments about Dragon Ball so far. Now I know why he joined the Noobs Association.

Gohan CAN turn into Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2. Why doesn’t he turn into Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 when he fights Buu? That because Elder Kai already unlocks his secret power to the max and beyond that. So, transforming into Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 is UNNECESSARY. But he STILL can transform into Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2.

And Elder Kai says that physically transforming into Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 is wasting of energy, thus Gohan doesn’t transform into Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2.
