One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 Interview

Posted on September 8, 2013

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 is now available in North America, Latin America, and Europe for the PlayStation 3. The action/adventure game was published by developed by Tecmo Koei’s Omega Force team and published by Namco Bandai.

Saiyan Island had the opportunity to ask Hisashi Koinuma (Producer at Tecmo Koei) and Tomoyuki Kitamura (Director at Tecmo Koei) a few questions in regards to the game. Namco Bandai producers were unavailable, so a few questions were unable to be answered by the great Tecmo Koei staff. Without further ado, check out our One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 interview below.

1. One Piece has such a large, magnificent roster of characters! What process does the development team go through in deciding what characters will be playable or not?
The roster of playable characters is mostly decided based on what we see from character popularity votes, fan feedback, etc.

2. What factors went in deciding the use of a “What If” dream story instead of just continuing where One Piece: Pirate Warriors 1 left off with Eiichiro Oda-sensei’s manga story?
The game’s dream story was created to allow the appeals of characters of ONE PIECE outside of the Straw Hat Crew to flourish and have a chance in the spotlight.

3. How many years has One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 been in the works? What was the most challenging aspect of developing it?
The development period for this game was about a year and a half. The most challenging aspect of developing this game is that because ONE PIECE has numerous existing fans that hold a wide range of emotional attachments to the series, it is very challenging to satisfy everyone, but we approached the development of this game with the intention of providing a fun experience for as many fans as possible while treasuring the appeals of the original series.

4. Many of Omega Force’s “Warriors” games have been multiplatform. Is there any chance One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 makes it to the Xbox 360?
Unfortunately, there are no plans for Xbox 360.

5. One Piece Pirate Warriors 1 and 2 have been huge hits in Japan! Why did the team select a Warriors style of game rather than using the 1-on-1 fighting scenario like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z games?
We are sorry for the inconvenience, but the staff at Tecmo Koei Games is unable to answer this comment at this moment.

6. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 was released in Japan on March 20 and will be released in North America on September 3. What are the differences in the game between the two regions? Will the game have English dubbed voice acting? Any exclusive DLC not seen in the Japanese version?
There is no difference between the Japanese and the US versions. The US version will include the original Japanese voice acting. There is no DLC planned exclusively for the US version.

7. After the announcement of Pirate Warriors 1 as a digital download only, fans expressed the desire for a physical release. Why have both Pirate Warriors 1 and 2 been digital download only in North America? Any chance fans will have their wish come true, possibly as a compilation of Pirate Warriors 1 and 2 and all the DLC in one package?
We are sorry for the inconvenience, but the staff at Tecmo Koei Games is unable to answer this comment at this moment.

8. How many fans have purchased and downloaded Pirate Warriors 1 to date in North America? How many North American fans do you expect will purchase Pirate Warriors 2?
We are sorry for the inconvenience, but the staff at Tecmo Koei Games is unable to answer this comment at this moment.
