Dragon Ball Super: Author Explains Why Anime and Manga Have Differences

Back in April in the city of Naples, Italy, the Napoli Comicon opened it’s doors for a few short days. The illustrator/author of the Dragon Ball Super manga, Toyotaro, was on hand as a guest for all things Dragon Ball Super. The team at Manga.tv caught up with Toyotaro-san to interview him about life and Dragon Ball.

The interview is conducted in Japanese, but there are English subtitles available via YouTube’s caption feature for English speakers and French subtitles embeded within the video for the target audience in France.

Toyotarō-san talks about working on Dragon Ball Super and how much the original creator of Dragon Ball (Akira Toriyama) and the series has influenced him. He is actually the chosen successor to Toriyama-sensei. Toyotarō-san discusses Dragon Ball was created by Toriyama-sensei not to convey any messages or values, but simply to provide entertainment. Any values received by the reader/viewer are from within themselves. Further, Toyotarō-san shares a little bit about his life, working under constant time constraints and pressure, and how he only sleeps 4 hours on days he has to draw the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Many fans often wonder why there are some differences between the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga and Toyotarō-san addresses this. He says there is no direct link between anime and manga and that the possibilities lead to discrepancies. He and the team behind the anime are basically given the story by Toriyama-sensei, but it is just a narrative outline. The specifics, such as dialogue, are not provided so he has to fill them in. Once given the story outline, he and the team behind the anime then work independently of the other, ultimately resulting in anime and manga being out-of-sync.

You sound like a ret**d. The anime as no build up, it is all for kids. If you want sh*tty artwork, animation, bad story and Goku not being how Toriyama made him, then watch the anime. The anime contradicts everything from Z. The manga grows on it and shows real development. If you are a true DB fan and have lived through DB and Z, then read the manga. Only ret**ds watch the anime and say the sh*t that you have.

Why do you bleep out retard? It’s retarded… I agree with you that everyone who’s a fan of Dragon Ball Z should read the Manga. But you can also watch the anime, and enjoy parts of it like some of the fighting, and action. Yet if you want to a cohesive story brought to it you got to read the manga, and know if you’re watching the anime they differ a whole hell of a lot. So stop being so pretentious, because who gives a s*** what other people do or what they like or hate who gives a f***. Now go whine of reddit…

  • Null Void

Put the manga is better in every way. Plus you don’t know what the f*** you’re talking about I mean I watch the anime also. I only enjoy the fight/action in it for only the reason that it’s animated, but when it comes to everything else the Manga is Superior in every way. I only watch the anime to enjoy watching these characters in motion. I look at it as an alternate reality or future, because it’s not the same. The Manga will always be better, just go read it, and you’ll know what everyone means. Then you’ll realize how stupid you sounded especially about the fanfiction s*** you were talking about dip*hit. You know nothing… Go read, and stop making an ass of yourself online.

Lol I DO read the manga, that’s why I’m saying this. Sorry but Toriyama never went so hard and descriptive on things like the Super manga does. Most technical info about powers in Z, especially SSJ forms, comes from outside of the original manga Toriyama is a contextual writer most of the time. It literally is the calling card of DBZ fanfiction to overexplain things that is a fact.

He gives random arbitrary explanations and they don’t make any damn sense but fans eat them up because they’re explanations which is bullcrap.

Vegeta losing to Hit because of a way too specific power technicality was crap the anime handled it on technique alone and it was better. Everything about Kai ranking in the Black Arc was complete freaking nonsense. God Ki already IS ‘holding in your Ki’, Goku ‘holding in his Ki more’ might power him up but it ain’t letting him fight freaking fused Zamasu that was stupid as hell. Trunks’ form wasn’t explained but at least you see on screen exactly what it is and it makes sense why that would give him such a suddenly huge power boost.

Hell even this week – when the anime does something the manga did first even it still does it better without it being bullcrap.

  • Null Void

I know, he’s legally retarded in the anime lol.

  • Crossbone Gundam Full Cloth

Actually… the anime Goku from Super is the Goku that Akira Toriyama wanted in Z. : Not the otherway around

  • Konoha the Wiper

Crossbone to never get an anime
